Original 1950's "Fishing Bears Battery Operated Savings Bank" tin toy mechanical bank with original box. The toy was made by "W Toy" of Japan & has the maker's mark on the back of the base of the bank. The toy measures 7 1/8 inches across the base, in both directions. The base, counting the feet, is 3 inches tall.

From the bottom of the base to the top of Mamma bear's head is 6 7/8 inches. So, this is quite a large & impressive tin toy mechanical bank. The three bears & the base is made of litho tin which is gorgeous, bright, & has amazingly fresh & wonderful luster. The original arms, original ears, original fishing pole with suspension, original frying pan, two original tin fish. We believe that the toy would have originally had four fish. So, if we are correct, two of the fish are missing.

The base underneath has the four original rubber feet still present, as well as, the original coin trap. Yes, two of the original tin fish are present!! It is very rare to find any of the original fish with this toy!! The two original fish have minor wear. On the box lid the little bear is shown holding a fish.

But, we have not been successful in getting him to hold a little tin fish. The top of the litho on the base shows fish jumping out of water. The bears are fishing from a grassy section loaded with flowers. On one side of the tin base there is a scene of the father bear carrying a string of fish & the son chasing after the father while holding a fish over his head.

The other side shows the father bear walking with a fishing pole. The son chases butterflies with a net & the mother walks behind the son with an umbrella over her head. The litho tin base on the sides & top is very colorful & extremely attractive. The top & sides of the base are all fresh & wonderful & show only the most tiny insignificant signs of use.

There is a little wear on the raised coin slot from some coins going in. Underneath the base there is slight wear on the outside of the battery box lid. Essentially, the litho on all of the rest of the tin on this toy (except in the two areas mentioned) is 99+ & completely amazing!!!!! There are a couple of super thin scratches by the larger of the two fishes on the top litho shown jumping from the water. The back of the base has the marking "W Toy Japan".

The bottom of the tin litho base is fresh & bright. The interior of the battery box area for the batteries is fresh & bright. Two of the battery terminals are fresh & bright & un-oxidized.

The piece of copper inside the battery box lid has some wear from having batteries scratch it when being taken in & out. When we put batteries in to test the toy nothing happened & there was no movement & no action of any kind when we inserted coins.

So, we are offering the toy as NOT WORKING. The box is 100% complete & is entirely original. The front left bottom corner on the front of the box has an applied sticker with the wording Rethel Enterprises, Inc. " Below the sticker printed on the box is the word "Japan. Undoubtedly, the Rethel sticker (which appears to be of the period) covers up the makers mark which would be "W Toy" if we could read it. The box colors are very fresh, deep, & attractive with optimum richness & absolutely no fading. The box lid has some tears, bends, worn areas (especially at the two bottom corners). The box lid has repairs on the outside corners with scotch tape. The box lid has various scotch tape repairs on the inside. But, still the box lid feels relatively tight, stiff, & solid. The box lid retains all four of the original staples which are still in their correct positions. The box bottom, which originally had eight staples, retains four of the original staples still in their correct positions. So, four of the original staples are missing from the bottom of the box. There are some bends, creases, & a few small holes in the box bottom.

One bottom corner is torn & worn & this results in a small hole being present at that corner. The base of the box has various taped repairs (a number un-necessary). But, the box bottom still feels relatively stiff, sound, & solid.

The box bottom measures 7 inches by 7 3/8 inches by 7 5/8 inches. This is certainly one of the top classics in the 1950's battery operated tin toy mechanical bank genre. Although the original box, which we are thrilled to have present, has various flaws, this tin toy mechanical bank is truly an exceptional example. This offering represents a rare opportunity for the advanced collector of battery ops, tin toys, bears, or mechanical banks. The reference number for this item is #7812.
